A New Home: People of the Port

After several months at sea, on a voyage that was marked with tragedy, Welsh immigrant Harry Williams and his family, finally arrive in South Australia, in what was known to many at the time, as Port Misery. And while things are going okay for Harry in the first few weeks, there’s something that has come to trouble him greatly. As a Welshman, proud of his heritage, he is confronted by the realisation that the place he now calls home, was already home, and had been so, to another people… another proud culture… for a very, very, very long time.

This is the third and final instalment of a series produced by Heaps Good Productions in association with the team at the South Australian Maritime Museum. It is the final part of Harry’s story, for now.

Discussion Questions

There was a great deal of work to be done setting up the colony. What do you think life would have been like in those days of early colonisation?

Do you think many migrants have the same reaction to meeting First Nations people of South Australia that Harry had?

How do you think the experience of migration was the first colonists versus those in later waves? For instance, the first and second waves of German migrants.
